Trump Mocks Canada, Jokes About Wayne Gretzky as PM and Trudeau as ‘Governor’

In his annual Christmas message, President-elect Donald Trump had a playful jab at Canada, suggesting that hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, also known as “The Great One,” should run for Prime Minister—or even become the “Governor” of Canada.

On Christmas Day, Trump took to Truth Social and joked, “I just left Wayne Gretzky, ‘The Great One’ as he’s called in hockey circles. I told him, ‘Wayne, why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada? You’d win easily—you wouldn’t even have to campaign.’” Trump then added, “He had no interest, but I think the people of Canada should start a DRAFT WAYNE GRETZKY movement. It would be so much fun to watch!”

This came after Gretzky, 63, and his family were spotted at Trump’s election night party. Photos surfaced showing Gretzky in a white Make America Great Again (MAGA) hat, sparking a wave of reactions on social media. Fans of the hockey legend expressed their disappointment, with many saying it felt like a blow to see Gretzky, who they once admired, supporting Trump.

One user tweeted, “Gretzky was my idol growing up, so this stings. A lot.” Another shared their dismay: “I’ve always idolized Wayne Gretzky since his pro hockey days, but this is really disappointing.”

Meanwhile, Trump didn’t miss an opportunity to send a “Merry Christmas” to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trump continued his playful remarks about Canada, saying, “Taxes are far too high, but if Canada became our 51st State, their taxes would drop by over 60%, businesses would boom, and they’d be protected like no other country in the world.”

Trump’s comments about Canada being the “51st state” and Trudeau as its “governor” have been a running joke since the election. It all started after Trudeau visited Mar-a-Lago to convince Trump not to impose heavy tariffs on Canada. During a dinner, Trump suggested Canada could simply join the U.S., with Trudeau staying on as the “governor.”

Trump later called the dinner “very productive,” mentioning they discussed important topics like immigration, trade, and the fentanyl crisis. Trudeau, on social media, acknowledged the productive meeting and expressed a desire to work together again.

While the jokes continue, Trump’s tongue-in-cheek approach to Canada and its leader is a reminder of the playful and sometimes controversial nature of his leadership style.
