Oregon’s Attorney General, Ellen Rosenblum, just launched a new bilingual “Sanctuary Promise Community Toolkit” to help residents understand their rights and stay informed about important state laws.
In her statement, Rosenblum made it clear: “Every person has the right to live, work, play, and learn safely in Oregon, period.” This toolkit is a way for Oregonians to refresh their knowledge and feel confident in their rights, especially when it comes to interactions with immigration authorities.
Back in 1987, Oregon passed a groundbreaking law that made it the first state with “sanctuary” protections. This law prohibits state and local law enforcement from using resources to arrest people simply for being in the U.S. without papers. It’s an important part of Oregon’s history, and Rosenblum wants to make sure everyone knows about it!
The toolkit is full of easy-to-read materials, including FAQs like “What should I do if ICE shows up?” and “How can I report a violation of sanctuary laws?” There’s even a statewide hotline to report any issues.
Rosenblum encourages Oregonians to have conversations with their families about these laws and make a plan in case they ever need it. Knowing your rights ahead of time is key, and this toolkit is here to help.
So, check out the Sanctuary Promise Toolkit, get informed, and remember – your rights matter!
