Florida Democrat Switches to Republicans, Citing ‘Extreme Progressive Voices’ in Party

In a bold move that’s turning heads, Democratic Florida State Representative Hillary Cassel has announced she’s leaving her party and joining the Republicans. Why? She says the Democratic Party is straying too far from everyday values and leaning into what she calls “extreme progressive voices.”

Cassel, who is Jewish, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share her reasons. One major concern: the Democratic Party’s lack of strong, clear support for Israel during its ongoing conflict with Hamas. “I’m increasingly troubled by the party’s failure to unequivocally support Israel,” she shared.

But that’s not all. Cassel says she’s grown frustrated with how the party connects—or doesn’t—with regular Floridians. “I can no longer stay in a party that doesn’t represent my values,” she explained. “While I may not agree with every Republican on every detail, I know I’ll find collaboration, respect, and a voice.”

Cassel’s political journey is impressive. She won her Florida District 101 seat in 2022, defeating her Republican opponent by seven points. Just two months ago, she ran unopposed and secured re-election.

Interestingly, Cassel isn’t the only one making waves. Earlier this month, another Florida Democrat, Susan Valdes, also switched to the Republican Party, saying she felt “ignored” by her own.

These moves reflect growing shifts in Florida politics, sparking debates on values, representation, and party dynamics.
