It’s the final quarter of the 2024 season finale, and the Minnesota Vikings are trailing the Detroit Lions 17-9.
The Vikings started the second half with the ball after choosing to defer on the coin toss. They picked up a first down thanks to a penalty and then made a big move when Cam Akers broke free for a 58-yard run, setting the Vikings up with a first-and-goal at the Detroit 5-yard line.
But, when the Vikings faced a fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line, Coach Kevin O’Connell decided to go for it. Unfortunately, Sam Darnold’s pass to Jordan Addison was incomplete, and the Vikings turned the ball over on downs.
On the very next play, Detroit quarterback Jared Goff attempted a deep pass, but Harrison Smith of the Vikings intercepted it near midfield.
The Vikings took advantage of the turnover and scored another field goal, this time a 52-yard kick from Will Reichard, bringing the score to 10-9 with just under ten minutes left in the third quarter.
Detroit responded by adding another touchdown after a fourth-down conversion. Goff found Jahmyr Gibbs for a 9-yard touchdown, extending the Lions’ lead to 17-9 with just over two minutes left in the third.
The Vikings had a chance to score again, but Reichard missed a 51-yard field goal attempt to the right, keeping the score at 17-9. As the fourth quarter begins, the Lions are in a good position with the ball at the Minnesota 45-yard line, facing a 1st-and-10.
