President-elect Donald Trump has confirmed he will attend the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100 on Sunday. Speaking briefly with reporters at a New Year’s Eve event at Mar-a-Lago, Trump expressed his plans to attend, stating, “I’ll be there.” However, he did not provide details on whether he had spoken with Carter’s family.
Carter’s funeral services will take place in Georgia and Washington, D.C., from January 4 to January 9. Trump’s statement follows a history of campaign criticisms of Carter’s administration, but in the wake of Carter’s passing, Trump expressed respect for him, acknowledging his dedication to America. “While I strongly disagreed with him philosophically and politically, I also realized that he truly loved and respected our Country, and all it stands for,” Trump wrote on social media.
At the New Year’s Eve event, Trump also commented on the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, stressing the importance of releasing hostages. He expressed optimism about the future of the United States, saying, “We’re going to do fantastically well as a country.” His resolutions for the new year were simple: “I just want everybody to be happy, healthy, and well.”
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden celebrated the New Year with family, attending the wedding of his niece in Delaware, after cutting short his vacation in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
As Carter’s funeral approaches, tributes from across the political spectrum continue to pour in, honoring his legacy as a humanitarian and his post-presidency contributions to improving the nation.
