Trump Slammed with Lie of the Year While Biden’s ‘Lie of the Century’ Goes Ignored

In a stunning move, fact-checking outlet PolitiFact has awarded former President Donald Trump its infamous “Lie of the Year” designation. The decision has sparked outrage among conservative commentators, with some accusing the platform of blatant bias for overlooking what they call President Joe Biden’s “Lie of the Century.”

The controversy arose from PolitiFact’s annual tradition of naming the most egregious falsehood in American politics. This year, Trump earned the dubious honor for statements tied to election fraud claims, but critics argue the fact-checking site’s omission of Biden’s controversial comments on various topics reveals a double standard.

David Marcus, a prominent conservative writer, led the charge, accusing PolitiFact of “playing favorites.” In his latest op-ed, Marcus lambasted the outlet for failing to address what he labeled Biden’s “whopper of a lie” regarding the state of the economy and other key issues. According to Marcus, this perceived bias undermines the credibility of institutions meant to hold public figures accountable.

    The Allegations Against Biden

Critics like Marcus highlight statements from Biden that they argue are misleading or outright false. For example, Biden’s repeated claims about reducing the deficit and tackling inflation have been questioned by economists and analysts, who cite contradictory data.

“If Trump’s election fraud claims are the ‘Lie of the Year,’ Biden’s economic narrative is certainly a contender for ‘Lie of the Century,’” Marcus wrote.

Republican leaders have also seized the moment to point out what they see as glaring inconsistencies in how media outlets scrutinize political figures. “We’re not asking for a free pass,” said a GOP spokesperson. “But Americans deserve fair and balanced coverage from these so-called fact-checkers.”

    PolitiFact Responds

PolitiFact defended its decision, stating that Trump’s claims about widespread voter fraud had a uniquely corrosive impact on democracy, making them worthy of special attention. “Our mission is to highlight falsehoods that pose significant harm,” the organization said in a statement. “We stand by our analysis.”

However, critics aren’t satisfied, pointing to what they believe is a pattern of disproportionately targeting conservatives. Many argue that by ignoring contentious statements from Biden, PolitiFact and similar organizations risk alienating a large segment of the public.

    The Bigger Picture

The debate over PolitiFact’s Lie of the Year designation taps into broader concerns about media bias and trust in institutions. With an increasingly divided political landscape, many Americans feel fact-checking outlets have become extensions of partisan agendas rather than impartial arbiters of truth.

As 2024 approaches, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Both Trump and Biden are gearing up for potential rematches, and the narratives surrounding their records will likely dominate headlines. For now, the controversy underscores the growing tension between accountability and perceived bias in American politics.
