In the wake of the devastating New Orleans truck attack, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) sharply criticized the Biden administration for its handling of homeland security. Appearing on Fox Business, Johnson argued that the administration failed to prioritize the right issues, especially in relation to national security and border control.
He emphasized that the FBI’s focus on issues like racial extremism and conservative groups distracted from the real threats posed by an open southern border, which he believes has created vulnerabilities to terrorist attacks.
Johnson, who spoke with Louisiana officials about the situation, praised local leaders for their efforts but expressed frustration with the federal government’s response. He argued that the Biden administration’s focus has been misguided, particularly as the threat of terrorism grows.
He pointed to the tragic events on New Year’s Day, when Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a former U.S. Army member, drove a truck into a crowd in New Orleans, killing 14 people and injuring dozens more. Investigators later discovered an ISIS flag and Jabbar’s sympathies toward the terror group, underlining the potential risks of inadequate security measures.
Johnson’s remarks also included a call for “dramatic change,” urging for the swift arrival of President Trump’s administration to address what he views as a failure to secure the country. With a new cabinet and law enforcement leadership, Johnson believes the U.S. can better tackle the growing threats facing the nation.
