McCarter: End the Practice of Politicians Picking Voters
Statement from 15th Congressional District Candidate and State Senator Kyle McCarter on the President’s speech at the Capitol and the issue of “Gerrymandering” or redistricting:
“While the President and I don’t see eye to eye on all issues, we do agree on the issue of ‘Gerrymandering,’ a term given to an abused process of redrawing political boundaries at the state and federal level.
“At the Capitol today, President Obama said, ‘We should change the way our districts are drawn. In America, politicians should not pick their voters, voters should pick their politicians.’”
“We saw this abuse of the system the last time redistricting occurred in Illinois with the passage of Senate Bill 1178 in 2011. Added to the legislation, just prior to its approval, was a change that created a specially-drawn district for my opponent in the 15th Congressional District race. The immediate area around the current 20-year incumbent’s home was included in the district. The purposeful way the district was drawn for him looks like a ‘pigtail.’ The change benefiting my opponent added just a few suburban blocks of homes to the 15th Congressional District to include his own address. I agree with President Obama, Politicians should not pick their voters, voters should pick their politicians. The answer is an independent commission not influenced by politics and politicians looking out for themselves.”
Illinois’ 15th Congressional District is comprised of all or parts of 33 counties: Bond, Champaign, Clark, Clay, Clinton, Coles, Crawford, Cumberland, Douglas, Edgar, Edwards, Effingham, Fayette, Ford, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jasper, Johnson, Lawrence, Madison, Massac, Marion, Moultrie, Pope, Richland, Saline, Shelby, Vermillion, Wabash, Washington, Wayne and White.
