In a Historic Move, Biden Awards Second-Highest Civilian Medal to Jan. 6 Panel Leaders

Biden to Award Presidential Citizens Medal to Liz Cheney and Bennie Thompson for Jan. 6 Investigation Efforts

President Joe Biden is set to award the Presidential Citizens Medal, the second-highest civilian honor in the United States, to Liz Cheney and Bennie Thompson. The two lawmakers led the congressional investigation into the violent January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot, where supporters of then-President Donald Trump attempted to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

The medal presentation will take place during a ceremony at the White House on Thursday, where Biden will recognize a total of 20 individuals for their significant contributions to the nation. Among the honorees are individuals who championed marriage equality, a trailblazer in treating wounded soldiers, and two of Biden’s longtime friends—former Senators Ted Kaufman (D-Del.) and Chris Dodd (D-Conn.).

In a statement, the White House emphasized that these recipients share a bond of “common decency and commitment to serving others,” highlighting their dedication and sacrifice in making the country a better place. Last year, Biden also honored people who defended the Capitol from rioters or helped protect the integrity of the 2020 election, amid Trump’s efforts to challenge the results.

Cheney, the former Republican representative from Wyoming, and Thompson, the Mississippi Democrat, chaired the House committee that led the investigation into the January 6th insurrection. Cheney, who had a significant fallout with Trump after speaking out against his actions, notably declared she would vote for Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, even campaigning alongside her. This stance has further drawn Trump’s ire.

As Biden continues to consider actions related to those targeted by Trump, including potential preemptive pardons, the recognition of Cheney and Thompson underscores their critical roles in defending democracy and the rule of law. The forthcoming ceremony at the White House will serve as an important moment to honor those who stood up to the Capitol attack and its aftermath.
