Kaskaskia College’s Department of Workforce Development and Community Education is offering 16 community education courses for March 2023.

Courses to be offered include:

Trenton Education Center

Painted Sign Design
3/14 from 6:00-9:00 p.m.
Students will paint a custom sign perfect for their home using a piece of raw wood.

Basic Hair Braiding Techniques
3/30 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Students will learn hair braiding techniques from one of Kaskaskia College's own Cosmetology instructors. Each student is asked to bring a “model” to use for hair braiding.

Vandalia Education Center

Basic Drawing Class
3/2, 3/16, 3/23 and 3/30 from 5:00-6:00 p.m.
Students will learn basic drawing and shading techniques. Please bring a sketch pad and drawing pencils to class.

Crisp Technology Center (Centralia)

AARP Safe Driver Course
3/8 and 3/9 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
The AARP Safe Driver course teaches valuable defensive driving skills and provides a refresher of the rules of the road. Since 1979, the course has helped over 14 million drivers learn proven safety strategies and tips for how to adapt ones driving to compensate for physical and cognitive changes that may come with aging. Students may qualify for an automobile insurance discount by completing the course.

Nashville Education Center

Understanding Social Security
3/2 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Understanding social security can reduce your stress in planning your retirement. This seminar will cover your options for when and how to start your benefits, how to maximize those benefits, and what to look out for after retirement. There will also be a discussion of how Medicare fits with social security and the social security scams currently affecting our community. The seminar offers plenty of time for questions at the end.

Greenville Education Center

How to Use a Cricut
3/13, 3/20, and 3/27 from 4:30 p.m. -7:30 p.m.
Students will learn to use their Cricut machine and be comfortable creating various projects. Students will need to bring their Cricut machine, and a laptop or phone as well as other tools needed.

Medicare Simplified
3/14 from 5:00-8:00 p.m.
Medicare is complicated. Most people are overwhelmed with the options and find it difficult to get clear, simple answers. This is a non-sale, educational event to help you learn to navigate and understand your Medicare options. This class is for people approaching or already on Medicare, and caregivers. It will help you find your path through this complicated issue. This class will review parts A, B, C, and D, and how Medicare operates and where you fit into the equation. Come find out about the biggest gaps in Medicare today and learn strategies to protect yourself. There are dozens of people willing to talk to you about retirement income, but few people willing to talk about retirement outgo. Get your questions answered and finally demystify Medicare.

Get advice from a realtor on how to prepare your home for sale and maximize the return on your investment. Learn low-cost tips and tricks to getting your home ready to sell.

Current Trends in Beekeeping
3/27 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Learn about things to be aware of before beginning bee keeping.

Salem Education Center

Microsoft Excel
3/3, 3/10, 3/17, and 3/24 from 1:00-4:00 p.m.
Microsoft’s Excel is a powerful spreadsheet software program used organize and manage data related to business operations. This course focuses on mastering the fundamental tasks performed in Excel, including data entry, basic formula calculations, and formatting and style operations. During the course, you will learn how to build a spreadsheet from scratch and gain a greater understanding of the most popular Excel commands and functions. Master common Excel skills to improve performance and efficiency in the workplace.

Students will paint a custom sign, with a spring or Easter theme, perfect for their home using a piece of raw wood.

Basic Genealogy
3/21, 3/28, and 4/4 from 4:00-6:00 p.m.
Students will learn the basics of genealogy in this introductory course. This course teaches you to structure your research and study various sources of genealogical information – census records, courthouse records, cemetery records, family papers, library sources, and more.

Apple iPhone
3/22 and 3/29 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
This class will help students become more familiar with their Apple iPhone as they learn to add applications, send text messages, emails, and pictures. Get the most of your technology. Bring your fully charged Apple iPhone.
