JCCC awards Teacher of the Month

January 19, 2023

The Education Council of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce has started a new program to recognize teachers throughout the county each month. For January, nominations were sought from area schools. The Council received 31 nominations representing six different school buildings throughout the county. The Council ultimately selected Mr. John Walker from Waltonville High School as the January award winner. Mr. Walker received eight nominations from students and staff at Waltonville High School.

Mike Denault, Superintendent at Waltonville, commented that “John’s impact on the culture in our building is immeasurable. Our students both like and respect Mr. Walker. Every day, he meets the students in the hallway, greets them with an encouraging message, eye contact, and a high five. I see a lot of smiles from students as they walk away from John after an interaction. John has high expectations for all of our students and encourages them like they are his own kids. He genuinely loves our students and our school. His desire to see everyone succeed in life provides a benefit the students probably do not fully recognize at this point in their life. He will be one of those teachers kids come back to see year after year when they’ve graduated.”

One of the students who nominated Mr. Walker commented that “he’s definitely more than a teacher to me. I can go to him with anything and he will give me his honest and true answer. Definitely the best teacher in Jefferson County.” Another remarked that the “positive impact this teacher makes on their students is helping students grow their profession and learn what they want to do.”
The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce will seek nominations each month from area schools. Award recipients receive a $25 gift card to area Chamber member businesses.
