City of Mt. Vernon adds fitness court
Soon the City of Mt. Vernon will unveil its newest quality of life addition at Lincoln Park, a sleek and modern outdoor Fitness Court® with a supporting mobile app. This capital project is a featured part of a 2020 initiative launched by National Fitness Campaign (NFC), a nationwide consulting organization that partners with cities and schools to plan, build and fund healthy infrastructure.
This year, the City of Mt. Vernon, and dozens of other select recipients from around the country were awarded a $30,000 grant from NFC to help support the program and funds from a Blue Cross Blue Shield grant. In addition to grant funding, a city match was contributed to make the project possible in Mt. Vernon.
“We are pleased to be able to bring this addition to Lincoln Park, just south of the Aquatic Zoo,” said Mary Ellen Bechtel, City Manager. “It will provide an opportunity for everyone to have a unique workout experience and promote a healthy lifestyle for our community.”
The new Fitness Court® at Lincoln Park is an open-air wellness center that allows users to leverage their own body weight to get a complete workout. Created with adults of all ages in mind, the Fitness Court is adaptable for all fitness levels. New users can also download the free Fitness Court App — a coach-in-your-pocket style platform — that transforms the outdoor gym into a digitally supported wellness ecosystem. The Fitness Court App, entitled “Fitness Court”, is available for iOS and Android.
National Fitness Campaign developed the trademarked seven-station system in 2012 hoping to inspire municipalities to transform public spaces into community fitness hubs. There are currently 100 active Fitness Court locations across the country, and the Campaign will reach a total of 250 cities and schools by the end of 2020.
“The location for the Fitness Court is easily accessible and hopefully just the beginning of recreational additions to that area,” said Mayor John Lewis. “We have been working on updating the City’s Comprehensive Plan and one thing that stood out in many comments and suggestions from the Listening Sessions was more recreation. This grant enables us to add recreational opportunities for our residents.
Residents will be invited to attend an Opening Day Launch Event July 15, 2022, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. to try the Fitness Court® and learn about upcoming community wellness events and programming. Currently, the City of Mt. Vernon is seeking Ambassadors to help the community learn about the Fitness Court and its opportunities.
