Centralia BPW holds meeting

Centralia Business and Professional Women held the February meeting at Marilyn’s Restaurant on Wednesday, February 8. President Tischa Daugherty welcomed members and began the meeting. February birthday celebrants were honored and chose a gift from the birthday basket. The treasurer’s report was presented and will be filed for audit.

The Trivia Committee announced that the 2023 Coming to America fundraiser has been the most profitable one to date. Twenty-four teams enjoyed the evening of fun, laughter and submitting answer sheets. BPW offered a special thank you the to Centralia American Legion for allowing BPW to host the event at their facility and for being the table sponsors. Master of Ceremony Ray Ainslie and his assistant, George Macz did an outstanding job and are looking forward to the 2024 event.

To encourage members to bring a guest to the meeting, a drawing for a gift card will be held for those who bring guests. Tammy Resch, fundraising coordinator gave an updated report on the current fundraising projects. The trivia event sponsored by Poplar Place was very successful and Centralia BPW thanks them.

Education Chair Stephanie House advised the membership that scholarship applications are now available for graduating high school seniors, undergraduate students and students age 25 and older. Applications are available online at www.centraliabpw.org. All applications must be postmarked by March 31.

Stephanie Aarons Dennison, Becca Deomes and Melodie Ainslie were elected and Tischa Daugherty and Mary Jones were appointed to the nominating committee for the 2023-2024 slate of officers which will be presented to the membership at the next meeting.

Sally Tiemann honored Black Heritage month by recognizing member Leona Jones and former members of the organization. Linda Jones was president of the local organization as well as state president. Other members remembered were Clara Rouse Voss, Delores Wanzo, Dorothy Coleman, Eunice Garrett, Lynette Jones, Faye Scott, Rosalie Scott, Ernestine Foster, LaQuilia Graham and Sherilyn Jefferies

The next meeting will be held at Marilyn’s Restaurant on March 8. Members and guests may dine at 5:30 p.m. Plated dinner of beef roast, mashed potatoes and gravy, carrots, and salad will be served. The meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. Guest speaker will be Loretta Graham, CEO of Girl Scouts of Southern IL.
