Handel’s Messiah Performance in Centralia & Salem

March 17, 2016
Travel back in time with the Kaskaskia College Community Chorale and other local singers as they collaborate to present Part II of Handel’s oratorio Messiah, under the direction of Professor Lynda Marshall.

“It is truly amazing to experience the joy of the rehearsal process where many singers of different backgrounds came come together to create beautiful music that was composed almost three hundred years ago”, according to Professor Marshall.

Being new to Kaskaskia College this year, Marshall was delighted when a local community member contacted her regarding the possibility of rehearsing and conducting a staple of choral repertoire with other local singers. “Handel’s “Messiah” is part of standard choral repertoire for every collegiate, amateur, and professional singer to learn and perform”, said Marshall.

“Messiah” is most often presented during the Christmas season which leads many to believe the work was originally composed for Christmastide. However, the work was actually first performed in Dublin, Ireland, on April 13, 1742, during the Eastertide season. Featuring the famous, “Hallelujah” at the conclusion of Part II, “Messiah” continues to move audiences all around the world with its musical intricacies and aesthetic delight. The presentation will include a forty-voice chorus and feature local soloists, Deanna Stevenson and DeAna Manns. Opening the presentation will be an organ prelude presented by St. Mary Catholic Church organist, Doug Tucker.

The event will feature the Kaskaskia College Community Chorale and singers in local communities and organizations including: Grace United Methodist Church, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Centralia Cultural Society, Salem First Baptist Church, Salem Lutheran Church, and Trinity Lutheran Church.
