MrBeast, the famous YouTuber, got engaged to his girlfriend, Thea Booysen, on Christmas Day at their home, surrounded by their families. The proposal was a big surprise for Booysen, who shared the story with PEOPLE.
The proposal happened after they exchanged Christmas presents with their families. MrBeast made a bit of noise by dropping a large box before surprising Thea with the real gift — an engagement ring. He then got down on one knee and asked her to marry him, which she, of course, said yes to.
MrBeast wanted the proposal to be a private and special moment, even though many might have expected a grand public gesture. “I wanted it to be really intimate,” he said. The ring he proposed with was a beautiful diamond on a rose gold band with additional diamonds on the sides.
The couple met in 2022 when MrBeast visited South Africa. They instantly connected over shared interests, especially in science and YouTube. They spent hours talking and had a strong bond from the beginning. Thea was initially surprised by how humble and smart MrBeast was, and their relationship quickly grew from there.
MrBeast had already planned to propose after Thea graduated with a master’s degree in human cognitive neuropsychology from the University of Edinburgh. The couple had been talking about their future together, including their thoughts on having children and how they want to spend their later years.
The couple’s engagement is a natural next step for them, as Thea says they already feel married. “In my mind, we’re already married,” she shared. The couple is now planning a wedding, and though MrBeast is known for his big public stunts, they plan to keep the wedding small and intimate, with just close friends and family. They are considering holding the wedding on a private island far away from the spotlight.
