Jean Smart: Donate Awards Show Funds to Help L.A. Firefighters and Fire Victims

Actress Jean Smart, known for her role in Hacks, has urged networks broadcasting upcoming awards shows to cancel their broadcasts and donate the advertising revenue to help victims of the wildfires in Los Angeles. She made the request in an Instagram post, asking for respect to the people affected by the fires during Hollywood’s usual season of celebration.

Smart posted the message with an “ATTENTION” label at the beginning, asking networks to seriously consider this option. She shared her thoughts while the wildfires were still raging in Los Angeles, especially with the Palisades Fire threatening neighborhoods. Her post quickly received positive responses from many people on Instagram.

Smart’s message comes as the entertainment industry is facing disruptions due to the wildfires. The Critics Choice Awards, SAG Awards, and Academy Awards are among the shows affected. Some of these events have been delayed or postponed due to the fires. For example, the Oscars have been moved from January 17 to January 19.

In addition to the wildfires’ impact on awards shows, productions of several popular TV shows have paused filming. Smart’s own show, Hacks, has stopped production temporarily because of the fires. Other shows like Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS, Suits LA, and Abbott Elementary have also paused filming for the time being.

The wildfires have caused serious damage in Los Angeles. Nearly 2,000 buildings have been destroyed in the past two days. Of these, 1,000 structures were damaged in the Palisades Fire, and 972 were burned in the Eaton Fire near Altadena. Tragically, five people have lost their lives in the fires, and five firefighters have been injured while battling the flames. One firefighter was hurt while fighting the Palisades Fire.

Smart’s call for action highlights the ongoing devastation from the fires and the need for the entertainment industry to consider ways to help those affected. By canceling the awards broadcasts and redirecting the revenue, she hopes to provide crucial support to the people struggling in the midst of this disaster.
