The tragic death of Debrina Kawam, a 57-year-old woman from Toms River, New Jersey, shocked both New York City and her local community. The New York Police Department (NYPD) confirmed that Kawam was set on fire while sleeping on a subway car in Brooklyn. Surveillance footage and forensics helped identify Kawam as the victim.
The NYPD charged 33-year-old Sebastian Zapeta with murder and arson after he allegedly approached Kawam on the stationary F train at the Coney Island stop. Witnesses say Zapeta set her clothes on fire and then fanned the flames, leaving her to burn while he sat on a nearby platform, watching the horrific scene unfold.
Kawam’s last known address was in Toms River, where she had ties to a home on Waterberry Court. Neighbors were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic events. Olga Corpion, who briefly met Kawam in May 2024, recalled their encounter when Kawam had come by looking for her mother. Corpion had offered help but never heard back from her.
Governor Phil Murphy expressed his heartbreak over the incident, calling it a “heinous attack” and urging for justice. Police believe that Kawam and Zapeta did not know each other, and the motive behind the brutal crime remains unclear.
Kawam had spent some time in the New York City homeless shelter system, and her death highlights the vulnerability of homeless individuals in urban environments. As authorities continue to investigate, the community mourns the loss of a woman whose life ended in such a senseless and violent way.
Zapeta is facing multiple charges, including murder and arson, as the investigation moves forward. The tragic death has left many heartbroken and outraged by the senseless violence.
