Three people have been arrested after a tragic incident in Michigan involving a deadly shooting and the kidnapping of two young children.
On Wednesday evening, police responded to a 911 call about a shooting at a home in Northfield Township, just north of Ann Arbor. Upon arrival, officers found two people, Jennifer Lyn Bernhard, 48, and Stevie Ray Smith, 74, dead from gunshot wounds, according to reports by All About Ann Arbor.
A third person, a 52-year-old, was also shot and injured but survived. They were rushed to the hospital and are now in stable condition. Authorities have not yet released their identity.
After the shooting, police discovered that two children, a seven-year-old and a four-year-old, had been taken from the home. Thankfully, the children were found safe and were taken to a hospital for evaluation, ensuring their wellbeing.
Three suspects connected to the incident have been arrested and are now in custody. Authorities are working on formal charges, which could be announced as early as Friday. If charged with first-degree murder and convicted, the suspects could face life in prison.
According to investigators, the violence stemmed from a custody dispute.
The community is reeling from the shocking event. “It’s definitely shocking,” said local resident Chuck Linblade in an interview with CBS News Detroit. “Stuff like that isn’t that common around here. Crime in general really isn’t an issue, let alone something of that magnitude.”
