The victims of the deadly truck-ramming attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans on New Year’s Day are being remembered by their grieving families, who describe their loved ones as vibrant and full of promise. Among those killed was 19-year-old Kareem Badawi, a freshman at the University of Alabama. He was remembered by his family for his intelligence, kindness, and humor. His final text exchange with his father, Belal Badawi, was a heartfelt “Happy New Year,” which would be their last communication.
Another victim, 27-year-old Tiger Bech, had recently graduated from Princeton University and moved to New York City to work in capital markets. His mother described him as “on top of the world” and full of life. He had been in Louisiana for a hunting trip with college friends before the tragic attack.
Drew Dauphin, a 2023 Auburn University graduate, was also killed, leaving behind a devastated family. His brother, Matthew, survived the attack, but Drew tragically did not. Family friends described him as kind-hearted, and his university president expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
Eighteen-year-old Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux was another victim, remembered by her mother as a sweet and outgoing young woman who was excited to begin nursing school. Despite her mother’s concerns, Nikyra spent her final moments on Bourbon Street, sharing the same excitement as so many young people celebrating the New Year. These victims, and many others, are deeply missed by their loved ones.
