President Joe Biden has pledged full support in the aftermath of the devastating attack that took place on Bourbon Street in New Orleans early New Year’s Day. The attack, in which a pickup truck plowed into a crowd, killed 10 people and injured at least 35 others, is now being treated as an act of terrorism by the FBI.
Biden said in a statement that he’s been in constant contact with federal law enforcement, his homeland security team, and the mayor of New Orleans since the attack occurred. He expressed his gratitude for the quick and brave response of local police officers who helped prevent even worse harm. The driver of the truck was shot and killed in a confrontation with police, and two officers were injured in the exchange but are now stable.
“The FBI is leading the investigation, and they’re treating it as terrorism,” Biden shared. “I want to make sure that all the necessary resources are available to those investigating this senseless tragedy.”
Biden also extended his heartfelt sympathies to the victims and their families, saying, “These people were just trying to enjoy their holiday, and their lives were taken in a cruel and brutal way. There’s no excuse for violence like this, and we won’t stand for any attacks on our communities.”
The attack happened at around 3:15 a.m. local time on January 1, when the driver of the pickup truck intentionally drove into the crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter. The New Orleans Police Department described the driver’s actions as deliberate, confirming that this wasn’t an accident or a DUI incident, but a more complex situation.
Although details about the suspect haven’t been revealed yet, authorities are continuing to investigate, and more updates are expected soon. The FBI is working with local law enforcement to uncover all the details and ensure justice is served.
Biden promised to stay updated on the investigation and vowed to provide more information as it becomes available. In the meantime, he’s committed to ensuring the full support of federal, state, and local agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.
