Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez have officially finalized their divorce, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE. The divorce comes after nearly 20 weeks since Lopez filed for separation on August 20.
The couple, who reconnected in 2021, married in a small Las Vegas ceremony in July 2022. They later celebrated with a larger wedding in Georgia in August 2022, surrounded by friends and family.
Lopez filed for divorce on the second anniversary of their Georgia ceremony, naming April 26 as their separation date. She cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split. In her filing, Lopez requested no spousal support for either of them and asked that attorney fees be shared. She also noted that the details of their assets and properties would be determined later. Additionally, Lopez asked to return to her maiden name, Jennifer Lynn Lopez.
A week after filing, a source close to Lopez shared that she seemed “relieved,” though it was clear that she didn’t want the divorce. Despite the split, she still cared deeply for Affleck, and both loved each other. Lopez is not the type to give up easily. Meanwhile, Affleck was described as “doing well” and focusing on his work, especially in the wake of the filing. He was also said to be happy spending time with his kids.
Rumors about trouble in their marriage began in May when the two were not seen together for weeks after a March 30 sighting in New York City. While Lopez promoted her film Atlas and attended events like the Met Gala without Affleck, they were later seen together again in Los Angeles and attended Affleck’s daughter Violet’s graduation.
Lopez has twins, Max and Emme, with her ex-husband Marc Anthony. Affleck shares three children with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner: Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel.
Over the summer, the couple spent time apart, with Lopez on a European vacation and in the Hamptons for the Fourth of July and her birthday. Affleck worked on The Accountant 2 in Los Angeles during the same period.
Lopez later appeared at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, making her first public appearance since filing for divorce. Although Affleck co-produced her film Unstoppable, he did not attend the event. On September 16, Affleck and Lopez shared a family meal with their kids at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
In December, Lopez shared a video montage of her year, which included highlights like her stunning appearance at the 2024 Met Gala, a red carpet moment at the Atlas premiere, and scenes from her movies Unstoppable and This Is Me… Now: A Love Story. In the video, Lopez reflected on her journey, saying, “In my low moments, I’ve learned to just feel the feelings and then let them go,” showing her resilience and growth after the divorce.
