Cinematographer Roger Pratt Passes Away at 77: A Legacy of Iconic Films

The world of cinema mourns the loss of Roger Pratt, the legendary British cinematographer whose visionary work spanned over 35 iconic films. Pratt, aged 77, passed away in December 2024, as confirmed by the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC).

Born in 1947 in the Midlands, Pratt’s illustrious career was shaped by his studies at the London Film School. Over the decades, he contributed his brilliance to films that defined generations, including Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Troy, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Chocolat, and the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid.

Pratt’s creative partnership with renowned filmmakers like Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam brought cinematic masterpieces to life. His collaboration with Burton on the 1989 Batman movie redefined the superhero genre with its dark, gothic visuals. Pratt also worked on Gilliam’s classics like Brazil, The Fisher King, and 12 Monkeys.

Terry Gilliam fondly remembered Pratt’s dedication and ingenuity on the set of Monty Python and the Holy Grail: “He ran down the mountain, forded a river, grabbed the right lens, and got the shot. That moment, I fell in love with Roger.”

In 2023, Pratt was honored with the BSC Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his extraordinary contributions to the art of cinematography.

Fans and colleagues have taken to social media to pay tribute. One admirer wrote, “Farewell to the incomparable Roger Pratt. We’ll miss his light.” Another posted, “Goodbye to the great Roger Pratt.”
