Beloved Journalist and Husband of Meredith Vieira, Richard Cohen, Passes Away at 76

Richard Cohen, Esteemed Journalist and Husband of Meredith Vieira, Dies at 76

Award-winning journalist Richard Cohen, the husband of former “Today” show host Meredith Vieira, passed away on Christmas Eve after a two-month battle with pneumonia, as confirmed by Vieira’s representative, Michael Gantz. Cohen was 76.

The Hudson Independent first reported Cohen’s death, which was later confirmed by USA TODAY. Cohen had faced significant health challenges throughout his life, including a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis over 50 years ago and surviving two separate battles with cancer. Despite these obstacles, he remained a determined and accomplished journalist and author.

Cohen and Vieira shared nearly four decades of marriage and had three children: Benjamin, 36, Gabriel, 34, and Lily, 32. Cohen often spoke about his gratitude for his family and career, saying in a 2019 interview with Yahoo Life, “I look at our three kids, I look at our relationship, I’ve written four books … what do I have to complain about?”

Cohen’s journalism career was distinguished, earning him three Emmy Awards for his work at CBS News before he transitioned to CNN. He also contributed to PBS and ABC during his tenure in the industry. In addition to broadcast journalism, Cohen was an accomplished writer. He penned a health column for The New York Times and authored several books, including one chronicling his own battles with chronic illness and another exploring the experiences of five individuals facing similar health challenges.

Cohen was also a vocal advocate for people living with chronic illnesses. In 2009, he was honored for his advocacy work by AARP Magazine at the Inspire Awards. His courage and resilience in the face of personal health struggles left an indelible mark on many.

Cohen’s legacy extends beyond his professional achievements. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and a beacon of hope for those navigating the challenges of chronic illness. The family has requested privacy as they mourn this significant loss.
