August Customer Service Workshop

July 11, 2016
A free four-week workshop will be held for those who are in, or who would like to be in, customer service-related positions. The workshop is a collaborative effort between the Mt. Vernon Tourism Department, Jefferson County Development Corporation and the Greater Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and will consist of four two-hour sessions to be held August 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The classes will be held at the Municipal West Building in Mt. “Each week will have a different component, but each component is equally important for someone who works in a job where they provide customer service, whether it is fast food, retail, hospitality, etc,” commented Mike Beard, Director of the Greater Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce.

“We’d like Mt. Vernon to become known as a town that provides great customer service,” Angela Schrum, Director of Tourism reports.  “This will take some work, as it would for any town, and time, but we have to start somewhere and this is it.  In this workshop, individuals will learn information about the importance of customer service and how it not only benefits their employer, but benefits the individual employee as well.”
Designed for front line employees, the workshop has other benefits. “Every person who completes the entire course will receive a certificate that they have completed both the World-class Workforce training and the Customer Service program,” Jonathan Hallberg, Director of the Jefferson County Development Corporation stated. “This training shows employers that employees and applicants care about their work and the jobs they are doing.”
The Greater Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce has already had a “Secret Shopper” program going on to promote excellent customer service in the area and the group plans to expand the program in the future, with “Customer Service Champions” sought out and prizes awarded quarterly. Additionally, the businesses they work at will be recognized and the winners will be invited to the Annual Chamber Christmas Luncheon in December.
“We hope this will serve as an incentive for business managers too, to allow their front line staff to attend the workshop. Ultimately, it will benefit the businesses to have employees well trained in customer service initiatives and eventually the city as a whole. The plan is for this to be the first of many endeavors by the three offices housed in the Municipal-West Building to help businesses and individuals with honing customer service skills,” Schrum concluded.
Space for the workshop is limited so those interested are encouraged to register soon for the workshop, please call the Mt. Vernon Tourism office at 618-242-3151.
