Airport of the Year 2016

The Centralia Municipal Airport was honored as “General Aviation Airport of the Year <5500 ft.” Also honored were: St. Louis Regional Airport as “Reliever Airport of the Year”, Chicago O’Hare International Airport, “Primary Airport of the Year”; Whiteside County Airport (Sterling/Rock Falls), “General Aviation Airport of the Year >5500 ft”, Zelmer Memorial Airport (Palmyra), “Private – Open to the Public Airport of the Year”; Clay County Hospital (Flora), “Heliport of the Year”; and Airport Steak House (Coles County Memorial Airport), “Restaurant of the Year.”

The criteria for the award selections include: cooperation and coordination with IDOT and FAA by airport management, facility’s safety record, service provided to the local community and general maintenance of the facility.

The Illinois aviation system is one of the largest in the nation, composed of more than 830 landing facilities. Previous IDOT studies have shown that aviation contributes nearly $41 billion to the state economy every year.
