SAG Awards Cancels Live Nomination Announcement Amid LA Wildfires

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards nominations, which were supposed to be announced in person on Wednesday morning, have been canceled due to the devastating wildfires and strong winds in the Los Angeles area. Instead of the live event, the nominations for the awards, which honor the best performances in movies and television, will now be shared through a press release.

The wildfires have been affecting areas in Los Angeles, especially in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena neighborhoods, which are seeing homes and buildings burning as a result of the strong winds. The fires have caused significant damage, prompting authorities to cancel several planned events in the entertainment industry, including premieres for major films. Among the events canceled was the premiere of the Robbie Williams biopic “Better Man,” the premiere of Jennifer Lopez’s movie “Unstoppable,” and Universal Pictures’ upcoming horror film “Wolf Man.”

The SAG Awards will still take place, though, with Kristen Bell set to host the 31st annual ceremony. The event will be streamed live on Netflix on February 23 at 8 p.m. Eastern time from the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles. Last year, actor Idris Elba hosted the event. The SAG Awards are often seen as a good predictor for the Oscars, especially for the acting and best picture categories. This means the SAG nominations are highly anticipated, as they offer a glimpse of what may happen at the Academy Awards in March.

Although the in-person nomination announcement was canceled, the SAG Awards will continue as planned, and fans can look forward to watching the ceremony on Netflix in February. The wildfires, however, have disrupted other major events, and it remains uncertain how the ongoing weather conditions will impact more future events in the coming days. For now, the focus remains on the ongoing efforts to control the fires and ensure the safety of those affected.
