HOUSTON, TX – FBI Houston, along with local law enforcement agencies, is actively searching a north Houston neighborhood in connection with the recent terrorist attack in New Orleans. The search is being conducted near the intersection of Hugh Road and Crescent Peak Drive, according to a press release from the FBI.
As of Wednesday evening, no arrests have been made, and authorities have secured the area, implementing flight restrictions while they continue their investigation. The search has drawn significant attention, but the FBI has not disclosed specific details about what they are seeking in the area.
Specialized teams and personnel are expected to remain on-site for several hours as part of the ongoing operation. The FBI emphasized that due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, further information could not be provided at this time.
NBC News reported a man was seen surrendering to a SWAT team outside a home in Houston connected to the suspect in the New Orleans terror attack. The FBI has declined to confirm whether this is indeed the suspect’s residence, and they have not provided additional comments about the search.
The investigation is linked to a deadly attack in New Orleans early Wednesday morning. At approximately 3:15 a.m., a man drove a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street, killing at least 15 people and injuring many others. After the vehicle struck the crowd, the suspect exited the truck and began firing at local law enforcement officers. Officers returned fire, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Two officers sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital.
The suspect was later identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas. In his rented Ford pickup truck, the FBI discovered an ISIS flag, weapons, and a potential IED. Other potential IEDs were also found in the French Quarter, intensifying concerns about the suspect’s possible ties to terrorist organizations.
The FBI is actively working to confirm the suspect’s affiliations and the full scope of his involvement in terrorist activities.
