Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100, will be honored with a state funeral on January 9, 2025, at the Washington National Cathedral. The service will be a significant national event, with President Joe Biden delivering the eulogy as per Carter’s request.
In remembrance of Carter’s legacy, the U.S. Army has outlined a six-day funeral process that begins with his motorcade traveling through his hometown of Plains, Georgia, where his farm bell will ring 39 times, marking his presidency as the 39th.
On January 7, Carter’s body will lie in repose at the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta, before being flown to Washington, D.C., for a public ceremony in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. The family has requested a private funeral and burial later in Plains next to his wife, Rosalynn Carter.
A Democrat who served from 1977 to 1981, Carter’s presidency is remembered for the Camp David Accords, helping secure peace between Israel and Egypt. Post-presidency, Carter dedicated himself to humanitarian work, earning him a Nobel Peace Prize. World leaders and citizens alike have praised Carter for his commitment to peace, humility, and compassion.
