A Virginia man, Brad Spafford, was arrested on December 17 after federal authorities discovered a significant stockpile of homemade explosive devices at his residence, marking the largest seizure of finished explosive devices in FBI history.
The FBI uncovered over 150 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which were primarily pipe bombs, during a search of Spafford’s property in Smithfield, Virginia, about 29 miles northwest of Norfolk. Some of these devices were labeled as “lethal.” The search also revealed a short-barrel rifle, for which Spafford was charged with unlawful possession of an unregistered firearm.
The explosive devices were found in a detached garage on the property, where authorities also discovered tools and materials used to manufacture explosives, including homemade fuses and pieces of PVC pipe. Several additional pipe bombs were found unsecured in a backpack in a bedroom. Disturbingly, the phrase “#nolivesmatter” was written on the backpack. Prosecutors noted that this phrase is associated with an extremist ideology promoting violence and mass killings.
Spafford allegedly kept an unstable explosive material in a jar inside his freezer, labeled “Dangerous” and “Do Not Touch,” alongside food items such as Hot Pockets. The investigation into Spafford began after a source reported that he had disfigured his hand while working with an explosive device and had been stockpiling weapons and ammunition.
Authorities also learned that Spafford had expressed support for political assassinations, engaged in target practice using images of the president, and sought qualifications in sniper-rifle shooting.
Spafford’s detention memo stated that his release would pose an extreme danger to the community, his family, and law enforcement officers tasked with inspecting his property. Spafford lived at the home with two young children, raising concerns over their safety.
The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the full scope of Spafford’s activities and intentions.
