In Malibu, schools are getting ready to reopen on Monday, even as firefighters continue their battle against the Franklin Fire. According to the Santa Monica Unified School District, three of the city’s four schools are set to welcome students back.
Malibu Elementary, Malibu Middle, and Malibu High Schools will open their doors, but Webster Elementary won’t be ready just yet. The fire caused some damage to Webster, so its students and staff will temporarily move to Malibu Elementary starting Tuesday while repairs are underway.
As of Sunday night, the Franklin Fire had burned through 4,037 acres and was about 49% contained. The blaze has already destroyed 20 buildings and damaged 28 more, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Thankfully, teams have finished assessing the damage.
Earlier on Sunday, roads in the area were reopened, but restrictions on Malibu Canyon Road were put back in place later that night for additional maintenance work after the fire.
With schools reopening and progress being made on containment, the community is slowly moving forward after this challenging event.
