Why Kaskaskia College is Veteran, Military Student and Family Friendly
Kaskaskia College is committed to serving area veterans and provides a one-stop shop for their students who have served our nation.
In-district tuition is offered to all veterans or military students attending as well as for their spouses or children using veteran educational benefits.
“The College was chosen by the state of Illinois to evaluate veteran’s military transcripts so they can receive credit towards their degree, specifically those enrolled in criminal justice. KC recently completed this project and submitted their articulation to the Illinois Community College Board, says Carrie Hancock, Coordinator of Veterans’ Services.
This shows the commitment by the college to give credit to those service members that have already had the training and/or education. This also assists them in saving benefits for their future education endeavors. KC has continued this practice with its other certificates and degree programs.
Kaskaskia College has dedicated the position of Coordinator of Veterans’ Service so students have one point of contact while attending KC. Services provided are assistance with veteran educational benefits, completing financial aid through the Department of Education, as well as academic advising. It is often referred to a “one stop shop.”
Every year in November Kaskaskia College hosts an Enduring Freedom Celebration in honor of Veterans Day. The program consists of a keynote speaker or a panel of veteran or active military discussing their military careers. It also features Kaskaskia’s music programs with the singing of the military service songs and playing of Taps. A flag ceremony is held where the flag is dedicated to a member of the Kaskaskia College community that shows true patriotism. Also featured that day are over 1,000 flags displayed in the yard outside the HB building along with yellow ribbons to welcome those attending the celebration.
Kaskaskia College has also established the KC Veteran and Military Family Student Center located on the main campus. The center is a space for veterans, military students and their families to build camaraderie and support as they transition from the military to civilian life. The space will feature a study area as well as an area for fellowship. Peer tutoring and mentoring programs will also take place in the center.
