Nominating Petitions For City Council Available

In April, 2017, the City of Centralia will conduct an election to select two City Council Members. Petition forms and information will be available in the City Clerk’s Office beginning August 30, 2016.

This election will be for the seats currently held by Council Members Howard Jones and Andre Marshall. Both of the seats are 4 year terms.

Candidates may begin circulating the petitions sheets on August 30th. Signed nominating petitions must be submitted to the City Clerk’s Office during the statutory filing period of Monday, November 21st until Monday, November 28th at 5:00 p.m. Ballot placement is determined by the order of submission in the Clerk’s office. If more than one person is in line to file at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, November 21st a lottery will be conducted to determine ballot position for those individuals. Also, petitions received in the mail on November 21st will be considered the same as being filed at 7:30 a.m. and would be eligible for the lottery to determine ballot placement. Also, those candidates filing simultaneously in the last hour on November 28 th will be included in a lottery drawing to determine the final ballot position.

If nine or more candidates file for the 4-year term Council positions, a Primary election will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2017. The General Election will be held on Tuesday, April 4, 2017. The successful candidates will be seated at the first regular or special meeting in May 2017.

The City Clerk’s Office is located at Centralia City Hall, 222 S. Poplar, Centralia. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. In accordance with State Law, this office will remain open until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 28 th to accept petitions.
