JCCC Hosts Candidate Forum

The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce hosted a candidates forum on Thursday, evening, March 7. The candidates that are up for election are City Council and Mt. Vernon High School Board.

Chamber Director Mike Beard and Brandon Bullard welcomed everyone. Then they asked for the candidates to come forward for a review of the evening’s event.

The first five candidates for Mt. Vernon High School Board came to the front, were introduced, and took their seats. The candidates were: Terry Knowles, Tena Byerly Elliot, Matthew Flanigan, Lora Mellot Greathouse and Jonathan Ashby.

The second set of school board candidates to speak were: Kent Jackson, Merle Hollman and David Edwards.

Candidates pulled numbers to see who would go first in answering the questions. Questions that they answered were:

Tell us the reason that you ran for School Board?

What skills or life experiences will you bring to the School Board?

What are the top three priorities you want to see addressed by the School Board during your term of office?

The candidates concerns were: safety in the schools, financial issues, having high quality teachers and community engagement.

The Mt. Vernon City Council candidates present were: Mike McDonough, Donte Moore and Raymond Botch.

The candidates’ questions that were addressed:

Tell us the reason that you decided to run for office.

What skills or life experiences will you bring to the City Council?

What are the top three priorities you want to see addressed by the City Council during your term in office?

Hot topic around town is the east side railroad crossing situation. What is your solution to this issue and how will it be funded?

The City Council’s priorities were: Infrastructure, relationships with current businesses, fiscal responsibilities, bringing more businesses to the community, need for great leadership and high work ethics, and to bring back the program “Police Night Out.”
