New business receives TIF funds
MT. VERNON — The city will be getting a new business, and its owners have received TIF funds to help make it happen.
Shade Tree Outdoor Power owner James Zimmerman is renovating property at 605 S. 10th St., allowing him to expand his business to a second location.
“What we are is an outdoor lawn equipment dealer,” Zimmerman told the TIF Board when the project was approved for recommendation to the City Council. “We’re currently in Whittington and we’ve been there for 14 years. What we’re wanting to do is add a second location here at this address.”
Work on the building is already in progress, with demolition of the previous wrap-around concrete porch, and installation starting on a new 12-foot wide concrete deck with an awning that will be used for display, as well as construction of a small area on the back of the existing building. The project also includes remodeling of the interior to create a showroom.
“At this point, at this location, we’re thinking sales only,” Zimmerman said. “Now, the room that we are wanting to add on the west end is going to give us one service bay for small projects, but we are hoping down the road in the future to add a shop for service at this location.”
The City Council approved TIF funds for the project at 50 percent of the applicable expenses not to exceed $23,222 to be paid as $10,000 on completion of the improvements and $1,332 for the next 10 years.
“That will come from their increment,” City Manager Mary Ellen Becthtel told the City Council. “Their increment will pay most of that.”
