Yesteryear’s Memories: WWI Memorial
This memorial commemorates the Centralia area soldiers who fought so bravely in 1917 and 1918. It was originally erected downtown, but later moved west to Fairview Park. The statue was a project of the Centralia Chapter of War Mothers. This soldier is typical in appearance for a dougnboy even though it isn’t clear where the term came from. A couple theories are that it refers to the large rounded buttons of the uniform, or perhaps the practice of calling young bakery apprentices doughboys. Several years ago, the statue was restored to better show it’s beautiful bronze detail and artistic merits.
