Yesteryear’s Memories: Davidson Biscuit
The early part of the 20th century was a boom time for Jefferson County. In Mt. Vernon a large commercial bakery company stood in the three hundred block of South Tenth Street. The Davidson Biscuit Company made several brand names of cookies, crackers, and breads including the well known Butternut Bread. The plant was a showcase of up-to-date equipment and procedures. There were many tons of large mixers, proofing enclosures, ovens, and hundreds of people found work there. Davidson Biscuit was a national concern and the local bakery continued to operate throughout the Depression, helping the townspeople survive financially in those tough times. The building is long gone, as are many of the manufacturing plants of our area.
