Yesteryear’s Memories: Button-up Shoes
Everyone had their own buttonhook, used for shoes like these. This was quite a fashionable pair in those days when shoes were hard to obtain and often hand made for each wearer. Marion, Jefferson, and surrounding counties have had a large number of cobblers and shoe stores over the years as well as shoe repair shops. Cheaper buttonhooks often came with a new pair of shoes but were also made in a wide variety of materials including steel, bone, pewter, sterling silver, gold, abalone, rubber and wood. They were used not just for shoes but boots, spats, corsets, leggings, gloves and rainwear. Plain or fancy, buttonhooks were an essential item and sped up the process of getting “gussied up’ for church or social gatherings.
