Small Livestock Workshop

September 16, 2015

Many basic skills are passed down from generation to generation and sometimes we become interested in a acquiring a skill as adults that our parents never taught us. This is where the Back to Basics Program steps in.  University of Illinois will be offering six sessions covering a wide variety of basic skills. Courses will be taught by experts throughout Extension and industry.

Session #3:  On September 24th, from 2:00pm-4:00pm, the Marion County Extension Office – 1404 E. Main Street, Rt. 50E, in Salem Illinois will be hosting a “Raising Backyard Chickens and Small Livestock” workshop.  This program, designed for the beginner to novice, will cover selection, health, nutrition and management for poultry and sheep/goats.  Discussions will also cover biosecurity for poultry on the farm.  University of Illinois Extension Educator, Jamie Washburn, is specialized in Animal Science, ruminant nutrition and reproduction, grazing and pasture management, animal product marketing and cover crop utilization in livestock systems.

There is no cost to attend this workshop, and is open to anyone that has an interest in learning the basics on backyard poultry and small livestock.  Pre-registration is required by September 22, 2015 and can be completed either online at or by calling Laurie George at the Jefferson County Extension Office at (618) 242-0780.  We hope to see you there and bring a friend.
