A local group from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows recently elected Chris Watkins as the new Noble Grand of the Mt. Olive Lodge #114 in Salem. Mr. Watkins was elected to fill the vacancy created when the Noble Grand passed away. The purpose of the Odd Fellows is to: “Visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead and educate the orphan.”

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows will celebrate its Bicentennial in America in 2019. Many of the local civic leaders in Salem have been members of the Odd Fellows. Some of the more notable members include Salem native and former Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan, aviator Charles Lindbergh, comedic actor Charlie Chaplin, and U.S. Presidents Ulysses Grant, Warren Harding, Rutherford Hayes, and Franklin Roosevelt.
