The Rotary of Mt. Vernon recently hosted its annual High School Honors Banquet. Over 100 Mt. Vernon Township High School seniors were honored by Rotary for academic, music and service accomplishments. Three students, Nicole Richard, Ella Warner and Jacob Parks, also received the John Howard Scholarship in the amount of $500. This scholarship was established in 2012 to honor students who exemplify the Rotary motto “Service Above Self.” It is named after long time Rotarian, John Howard. One student, Lauryn Willis, also received the Lumbattis Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Dr. John Lumbattis, a dentist who practiced over 50 years, was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Mt. Vernon in 1920 and is credited with starting the club’s annual Honors Banquet in 1946. After his passing in 1969 this award was established in his honor to recognize a student exemplifying outstanding achievement and leadership.
