KC TRiO Accepting Applications
The TRiO/SSS grant is a federally-funded program that provides services for eligible students. The U.S. Department of Education has awarded KC annual funding for a period of five years to help students overcome academic, social, and cultural barriers to higher education. Under the grant, KC has established the Student Support Services program that serves 140 eligible students with a goal of increasing their graduation, retention, and transfer rate. The Department of Education is providing $202, 031 for the 2013-2014 academic year to fund the program. TRiO/SSS is located on the main campus in the Success Center and provides services tailored to the needs of program participants. Some of the services available include: tutoring, peer mentoring, academic advising, assistance in completing the financial aid/FAFSA application, cultural experiences, college visits, workshops, assistance to transfer to a four-year institution, and referral to important services on campus and in the community.
The TRiO/SSS program provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements, and motivates students toward the successful completion of their post-secondary education. To qualify for the TRiO/SSS program, students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and must meet one of the following guidelines: A first-generation college student (which means neither parent has a four-year college degree), meet economic need guidelines established by U.S. Department of Education, or have a verifiable physical or learning disability.
Pat Stansfield, Director of the TRIO Program, says that, “Kaskaskia continues to provide convenience and confidence for our TRIO students. We support students not only on the Main Campus but also at each of the Education Centers. We can save them time in getting the answers and services they need. They can have the security of knowing they don’t have to do it all on their own. For these students, life gets in the way. Jobs and family responsibilities can make time management an issue. Lack of family experience with higher education can create difficulties in knowing how to navigate the college terrain. We want to be our TRIO students’ ‘One-Stop Shop’ for support.”
