Kaskaskia College is proud to announce that on Tuesday, January 22, it will host its Annual Celebration honoring the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Keynote speaker for the celebration will be Dr. Deanna Blackwell, Director of the TRIO Student Support Services Program at Lincoln Land Community College.

Dr. Blackwell earned her Bachelor of Arts in Literature and Composition at Eastern Illinois University, and a Master of Arts Degree in African Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 2011, she completed a Ph.D. at the University of Utah in the Education, Culture and Society Program. While conducting her research on the racialized experiences of students of color in predominantly white college classrooms, Deanna’s article about her own experiences as an African American Woman graduate student was published in the Journal of Race, Ethnicity and Education.

Dr. Blackwell’s perspectives on education stem from her work experiences which have included her first job as a primary caregiver at a daycare center, then as a Title 1 Teacher’s Aide, adjunct instructor for Parkland Community College, instructor at the University of Utah for courses in Multicultural Education and the Role of Schooling in U.S. Society, Assistant to Outreach Coordinator for the College of Education Dean’s Office at University of Utah, and African American Program Coordinator for the Center for Ethnic Student Affairs at the University of Utah. Before becoming a TRIO Director, she was the Director of Student Services for the Illinois Community College Board.

She has also served as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in China where she worked as a Teacher of English as A Foreign Language (TEFL). After serving in the Peace Corps for two years, she trained new Peace Corps China Volunteers how to adapt to the cultural differences and professional responsibilities of being a TEFL instructor. Deanna also designed and delivered diversity trainings for volunteers and Peace Corps China staff.

Dr. Blackwell is a dedicated student and teacher on the ways in which education and culture impact teaching and learning for students of all ages.

The morning will also highlight entertainment from Kaskaskia College students and staff.

The public is invited to join the students and staff at Kaskaskia College as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The celebration will be held in the Jane Knight Auditorium at 9:45 a.m. For further information, call 618-545-3182.
