Jefferson County 4-H Holds 43rd Annual BBQ
On the first Saturday of August, the Rolland Lewis Building in Mt. Vernon was packed with diners who mark their calendars each year for this annual fundraiser. Mary Ann Dagg, leader of the Texico Stars 4-H club, explained that the BBQ sandwiches are made from hogs which 4-H members showed at the Fair. Students from clubs all over the county pitch in to make the fundraiser a success, from setting up chairs to blending the “secret sauce” and serving customers personally. Proceeds help offset program fees, making 4-H affordable for even more youth.
“It’s a commitment,” explained Mary Ann, a commitment she has made for 29 years. Later this month, Mary Ann will travel to Springfield to be inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame. But when asked for a photograph, she pointed to the energetic team of volunteers around her who were demonstrating the core principles of 4-H: pledging Head, Heart, Hands, and Health to make the world a better place.
