Herb and Garden Show celebrates 31 years

MT. VERNON — The Midwestern Herb and Garden Show, now in its 31st year, continues a tradition of classes, seminars and vendors.
One of the largest garden events in the Midwest, the Herb and Garden Show will be held Feb. 8, 9 and 10 at Times Square Mall. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
The keynote speakers this year are Mike McGrath and Chef Robert Rhymes.
McGrath will be speaking at 11 a.m. on Saturday. His popular weekly syndicated radio show, “You Bet Your Garden” is described as an hour of chemical free horticultural hijinks.” The show is produced in the PBS studious in Bethlehem, Pa., and offers call-in advice. McGrath is also a contributing editor and columnist for Green Prints magazine, has authored books on tomatoes, composting and kitchen gardening.
Rhymes is a teacher at Kaskaskia College. His goals as an educator is to provide students with a foundation in the fundamentals of food cookery, according to information provided by the Herbs for Health and Fun Club. He wants to see each student blossom into a professional culinarian that has unwavering commitment to quality and excellence. A number of non-traditional students serve as his inspiration. Ryhmes will be speaking at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Additional programs and speakers will be presenting throughout the show. Subjects include Alpaca “beans” as Fertilizer; Lavender, Banding Hummingbirds; Pleasure of Herbs, Growing Roses with Minimal Chemicals, Tomatoes, Healing the Whole Family with Herbal Medicine; Growing and Harvesting Pecans in Illinois; Composting; Basic Bird ID; Honey Bees; Community Gardens; How to use Fresh Herbs and Spices; Keep Calm and Use Your Herbs; Garden in your 90s; Create a Garden Labyrinth; Blue Birds; and Wildflowers.
