This year’s Greater Centralia Science Fair has grown to include six schools and fifty-three students who will be competing in seven different categories for top honors with their science fair projects on Friday. The projects will be judged by Kaskaskia College science teachers. Brandon Cook, science teacher at Centralia Junior High, is the chairman of the Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce Science Fair Committee. Cook is pleased again this year for the continued sponsor support from Monsanto Company and Kaskaskia College. Monsanto provides financial program support and KC will award scholarship credit hours to the top three overall winners. First place will receive nine credit hours, second place, six credit hours, and third place, three credit hours. Students from Irvington, Willow Grove, Trinity Lutheran, Central City, St. Mary’s and CJHS will be participating this year.

Each school held their own science fair and the top winners from those events were able to advance to the Greater Centralia Science Fair. In all, 24 awards will be handed out to the participants. Students will have a busy day thanks to the staff at KC. Students will take a complete tour of the campus and will be able to participate in a science experiment conducted by a science instructor in one of their actual labs. They will also be taking the Career Cruising Interest Survey in the college’s Career Counseling Center. The Chamber has been involved in the Science Fair since its inception and have agreed to make it part of the Chamber’s plan of work. Kelsheimer said, “Our board of directors felt like it was a natural extension of our education committee and critical to the success of our business growth and development.” It is our hope that this event creates an interest in the sciences and will result in some students pursuing this as a field of study after high school. The Science Fair will be held in KC’s Lifelong Learning Center and will be open for the public to view the projects beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday April 10th. The awards presentation will begin at 6:15 p.m. and conclude at 7 p.m.
