KC Engineering Club Cleans Highway 50

The Kaskaskia Engineering Association (KEA), the Kaskaskia College Pre-engineering program’s student club, recently adopted a two mile stretch of Highway 50 between Shattuc Road east toward Sandoval. KEA, and other interested parties held a cleanup along the highway on Friday, April 12.

Equipped with mechanical grabbers purchased by Professor Eric Hofelich at a discount from Rural King in Salem and bright orange or yellow vests, the cleanup crew worked most of the morning and afternoon collecting enough trash to fill 80 large trash bags.

“Cleaning our section of the highway was hard work, but it was rewarding,” Professor Hofelich said. “I am very proud of the club and the volunteers for how good the roadway looks now, and I encourage other groups to pitch in and keep our roadways clean.”

The cleanup crew recounted stories of the different kinds of trash they found, as well as encounters with some of the wildlife, including several snakes. But everyone was in good spirits and shared in a feeling of accomplishment.

Steven Reynolds of Decatur, a member of KEA and a graduating sophomore in the KC Pre-engineering program, said, “We felt good about accomplishing a good deed, and we want to build a tradition of student clubs volunteering to do their part.”

Dr. Jim Underwood, President of Kaskaskia College stopped by during the cleanup. “Mark my words,” Dr. Underwood said. “You are sending a message of caring for the environment that others are sure to follow.”
