KC Cosmetology Program Hosts Southern Illinois Community College Cosmetology School Day of Education
Kaskaskia College recently hosted the first Southern Illinois Community College Cosmetology School Day of Education. Approximately 100 cosmetology, barber and esthetic students participated in the day’s activities with Lakeland Community College, Studio RLC from Rend Lake Community College and Olney Community College participating in the day’s activities.
The day began with a welcome from George Evans, Dean of Career and Technical Education and Interim President of Kaskaskia College. The students then heard from a panel of industry professionals with a question and answer period held after. Those cosmetologists on the panel were Lisa Zimmerman, Senior District Leader for Regis Corporation; Columba Campos, stylist at Reflections Unlimited 2 in Trenton; Kristi Ottensmeier, co-owner of Reflections Unlimited 2 in Trenton; Mandi Povolish, owner of The Final Cut in Nashville; and attending via Skype was Shawnee Heltsley, stylist at Prisma Salon in Charleston, SC and National Educator for Farouk Systems.
The students also participated in Cosmetology Student Olympics. These Minute-to-Win-It-Style games were centered around the Cosmetology theme and designed to reinforce skills such as communication, teamwork, organization and productivity. In the afternoon, students continued their education with professional industry educators. Danny Amorim, a barber educator from Andis, conducted a barbering class and Heather Joyner and Tiffany Boyer national educators from Gigi demonstrated advanced waxing techniques. The instructors attending hope to make this an annual traveling event.
