SSM Health in Southern Illinois hospitals’ laboratories receive continued national accreditation
MT. VERNON, IL (February 21, 2019) – The Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) has awarded continued accreditation to laboratories at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital-Mt. Vernon and SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Centralia based on results of recent on-site inspections as part of the CAP’s Accreditation Programs.
Barbara Scroggins, Director of Laboratory Services, SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital, and Carol Koehler, Director of Laboratory Services, SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, were advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the excellence of the services being provided. Each hospital’s laboratory is one of more than 8,000 CAP-accredited facilities worldwide.
“The CAP is pleased to recognize SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital and SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital as meeting the high standard set as part of the CAP’s Laboratory Accreditation Program,” said Bharati Jhaveri, MD, FCAP, chair of the CAP’s Council on Accreditation. “SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital and SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital join the thousands of others that are committed to raising the quality of laboratory services nationally and internationally.”
The U.S. federal government recognizes the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in the early 1960s, as being equal-to or more-stringent-than the government’s own inspection program.
During the CAP accreditation process, designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management.
CAP accreditation is seen as the “gold standard” by the lab industry, according to Kerry Swanson, Regional President, SSM Health in Southern Illinois. “By achieving this accreditation, it shows the level of commitment that SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital and SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital aspire to achieve the highest standards of quality in laboratory medicine and patient care in the communities we serve,” said Swanson.
