Rotary Club of Mount Vernon “Jack Overstreet Service Above Self” Award
The Rotary Club of Mount Vernon presented its inaugural “Service Above Self” award at this week’s meeting. Rotary President Mary Harvey reported the idea for the award came about as a way to honor a member of our “First Responders” in our community for valor and to say “thank you” and demonstrate how grateful we are for their service. “First Responders” are the heroes among us, she said, that have decided to face up to what most of us turn or run away from.
During the discussion of the award it was decided it was fitting to dedicate the prize to the late Jack Overstreet, a long time Rotarian who had a lifelong commitment to helping others. After a review of candidates from our communities’ police, fire and EMS services Angie Litton, owner of Litton’s Ambulance Service, was selected as this year’s recipient. During the award ceremony she thanked the club for the honor and recognized the service of her 40 employees.
