Property Tax 101: Property Tax Affects Everyone

February 22, 2018

Week 1 of 13: By Bob Watt, Jefferson County Treasurer

Every year millions of dollars are collected from property owners by way of property taxes — the single largest tax in Illinois. Whether you own property or not, this tax affects you; it is included in the cost of rent you pay, or products you buy. Everyone is affected.

Likewise everyone benefits from these taxes. If you attend a public school, use the library, drive on the street, or walk on the sidewalk; if you are protected by police or a fire department, or utilize county services you have benefited from the collection of property taxes. Following is a brief breakdown of where your property tax dollars go:
70 % education/schools;
9 % cities, villages & towns;
8 % county purposes;
7 % townships & road districts;
6 % other – fire protection, library, airport, etc.
